DDW 2013
On Tuesday 22 and Friday 25 October I visited the Dutch Design Week. We went to see the Design Academy first. I immediately noticed that there was a difference between the design of the Design-Academy and de design of the TU/e. The design of the Design-Academy is much more based on art, emotion and identity of the designer while the TU/e has a more scientific approach.
The next stop was the Klokgebouw and there was a big exhibition of many designers. There were a few designs that I think where very inspiring and I would like to be able to make such products. On the left you can see a cabinet that was made from solid wood. It is made with very much detail as you can see. The front part of the drawer is a 45 degrees angle and is fits perfectly if you close the drawer. Also the system that is used to open and close the cabinet is very subtle. You only have to push the drawer once and it slides open and no handles are used.
The table on the right is also made from wood and it is cut from one piece of wood and you can flip the table legs so that the table becomes one board of wood. This is very useful because then the table is very easy to store.
These are pots made from eggshells. And what I think is so good about this is that I personally never have thought about this material to use for anything. The material is normally used for noting and we trough is away but it turns out to be a very good material to use for such purpose. It is a very strong material and also very light. The only down sight that is not very easy to obtain or you have to trough away the inside of the egg.
The last exhibition that I visited was the Dutch Design awards. The project that I found to be the most refreshing was “Do Not Touch” from Iris van Herpen. The idea was to stay in the green zone with your cursor. This sounds to be not very difficult but there are many more cursors that also move and you have to try to keep track of your own cursor. This game I very nice to play and the concept is so simple and that is what attracted me the most. After playing the game your think why you have not thought of this yourself.
